Job searching in the summer tends to suck.
Managers take vacations, which leads to drawn out or all out stoppages in decision making about new hires.
Budgets can be run dry by this time, which means that some companies don’t have the funds to actually add to their headcounts.
And for us jobseekers, we spend the fleeting summer months enjoying the warm weather, relaxing and recharging.
But just because the summer isn’t the hottest time to actively pursue a new gig, that doesn’t mean you can’t use this time to warm up to a sizzling September job search.
1. Refresh Your Resume
Now is the perfect time to really invest the time into refreshing your resume and getting it ready for its own bikini season in September. Prioritize the content in your resume before choosing a sexy design. Focus on major wins and achievements that you can easily quantify. And of course, don’t forget to start it all off with a career summary where you brag about how great you are!

2. Don’t Get Lazy with LinkedIn
Make sure you keep actively using LinkedIn. If you’re not feeling so hot about your profile, take some time to whip it into shape. Make sure it sounds human, warm, and inviting. And make sure it doesn’t sound like a copy/paste of your resume.

3. Start Sweating Your Social Media
You might want to think twice before posting that pic on Facebook of yourself drinking a margarita the size of your head. And while you’re at it, take this time to really scrutinize ALL of your social media to see if your profiles portray professionalism so that you don’t have to wonder when you start applying for jobs at summer’s end.

4. Grab a Frap. Pick a Brain.
Ever heard of an Informational Interview? No? You’re definitely not alone.
An Informational Interview is like networking on steroids. It’s a time for you to meet with someone you’d love to know and learn from to gather more information on a company, industry, and keep your thumb on the pulse of the employment landscape. It requires you to be bold and ask for help (and time) from acquaintances and even sometimes strangers, and all in the face of potential rejection.
How might you effectively ask for an informational interview from someone who you know you could learn a lot from? Totally steal this template:
“Hi [Namey Name],
I’m hoping you can give me a hand. I’d love to take you for a [tasty beverage], and get your take on what it’s like to work at [cool company] / in [interesting industry].
I have been admiring your [personalized amazing professional thing] and would love to soak up all the wisdom you have to offer.
I’m sure you’re super busy, so if you can even spare 15 minutes, I would be so appreciative.
Please let me know what a convenient time would be to meet.
Thanks so much!
[Your Namey Name]”
5. Chill Out
If you started a job hunt before the summer commenced and now you feel it’s totally fizzled, take a time out. Don’t stress yourself out in a time where hiring processes slow waaaaaaay down, or halt altogether.
Use the time to really reflect on the trajectory of your job search, and to refine your focus and targets so that it’s full steam ahead come September!
