Grab Opportunities by the Balls

Grab Opportunities by the Balls

I met Seth Godin the other day. I have this #SethSelfie to prove it.

For those who aren’t on a first name or BFF basis with Seth like I am (I wish), Seth is a prolific writer and revered thought leader and entrepreneur.

How did I meet him?

I grabbed an opportunity by the balls.

[Figuratively speaking of course.]

Let me explain. I was at a conference and there was a serendipitous moment where he passed by with coffee in hand. I didn’t want to inconvenience him but I thought, what the hell, I’m going to take a chance because if I don’t, I’ll regret it forever.

And I did. I shook his hand and was able to snag this selfie.

All because I grabbed the opportunity by the balls.

grab opportunities by the ballsI haven’t always been a ball grabber. I’ve let many the opportunity pass me by because I was too self conscious or too whatever my excuse was at the time leaving me kicking myself because I didn’t step up and step out to claim and opportunity that was ripe for the picking.

Same went for promotions. It wasn’t until the few years before I left the corporate world that I asked for exactly what I wanted from my employer, and got it. More responsibility, more pay, more visibility, more projects. I was able to get it all.

Because I did what most people don’t do. I asked for what I wanted.

Many of us wait for opportunities to come to us. We hang out at work putting in the time, hours and paying our dues. We expect that opportunities will land in our laps as a result of merit. We anticipate the day that our bosses notice all of our hard work and reward us with, well, more work. But it simply does not work like this.

Opportunities come to ball grabbers.

Your boss is likely more worried about their own job than advancing yours. Even the most well-meaning and compassionate leaders are self-centered. It’s human nature.

go get whats yoursSo acknowledging that: Who is in charge of your opportunities?

You don’t have to look very far for the answer.

Opportunities are seized by those who tightly wrap their fists around them.

So go on. Grab those opportunities.
